Clear skies are a moving target.
The northern lights need two things: activity in the sky and a gap in the clouds. A guide who reads the forecast can drive to the clearest sky within reach, and knows when to wait and when to move.
On clear, dark evenings between September and April, the sky can fill with green. Some evenings it stays quiet. The lights are never guaranteed.
