How far is it?
Keflavík International Airport (KEF), Iceland's main international airport, is about 50 km from Reykjavík. The drive along the coast road across the Reykjanes peninsula takes about 45 to 60 minutes. There is no train in Iceland, so every option is by road.
Airport bus
Airport bus companies, such as Flybus and Airport Direct, run between the airport and bus terminals in Reykjavík in connection with flights. Many offer a connection to hotels and guesthouses for an extra fee. The public bus network, Strætó, also serves the airport, less frequently.
Good for: solo travellers and couples with light luggage who do not mind a shared ride and a change of bus.
Taxi
Taxis wait outside arrivals. They take you door to door, but over this distance a metered taxi is among the most expensive ways into the city, especially for a larger group that needs more than one car.
Rental car
Most rental companies are at or near the airport. A car gives you freedom for the rest of your trip, but after a long flight you start by driving unfamiliar roads, which in winter can be icy and dark. Check road.is and safetravel.is before you set off.
Private transfer
A driver meets you at the airport and takes you straight to your address, in a vehicle sized for your group and your luggage. It costs more than a bus seat, but for families, groups and anyone with a lot of luggage it is often the simplest and calmest option, and the price is fixed in advance.
Our Airport Pick-Up & Drop-Off runs at any time of day, timed to your flight. If your flight is delayed, we wait up to 45 minutes after the agreed time, and we have child seats for children under 135 cm.
Stopping at the Blue Lagoon
The Blue Lagoon is about 20 minutes from the airport, so many travellers visit on the way in or on the way out. Book your lagoon entry for a time slot first, then plan the transfer around it. See our Blue Lagoon Transfer & Visit.
